S.T.E.P. Scale Tape for Educational Purposes - Demonstrates geological and astronomical distances
The overall aim is to develop appreciation of the main facts of Earth History, our place in Space, and arouse interest in the relevant sciences, then to apply that aroused interest when participating in discussions related to our life choices as humans. The S.T.E.P. is designed for use outdoors with groups of up to 30 pupils, aged from around 13 years, to illustrate clearly 3 Aspects of Environmental Reality in ways that cannot be done nearly as effectively in a classroom.
Aspect 1: Astronomy
Planet Earth, and the scale sizes and distances of the inner Solar System, are displayed on a 100 metre scale. The vast distance to the next nearest star, and possible planets, show that Planet Earth is our only home.
Aspect 2: Geology
The most recent one ninth of the development of the surface of our Planet is indicated Period by geological Period. A 60 metre scale demonstrates how recent the emergence of the human species is and how sudden is our impact on Earth ecology and our future.
Aspect 3: History
A 40 meter section of the tape has a scale that represents recent history, from present to the start of the common era (BC/AD) and then carrying on back in time to 20,000 BC. This scale can be used to represent different time scales at 5 to 5,000 years per meter, enabling many sequences of human history to be displayed as a “time-line”.
The enclosed CD covers the first two aspects, whilst teachers of History may add further information at their own discretion. With reasonable care the S.T.E.P. should give good service for many years.
